Surat had first surgeon practicing as Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Acharya, later on Dr. M M Pandya (FRCS) started practices in Orthopaedics followed by Dr. Shirish Desai.

Initially few Orthopaedic surgeons used to meet at Ashaktaashram Hospital to discuss the clinical cases. This lasted for two years. SGOA is a brain child of Dr. Satish Patel, Dr. Ajay Patel, Dr. Amrut Jogia and Dr. Dayanidhi Desai.

First formal meeting was held on 4th June 1992 at Bapujini Wadi, Dumas. It was decided to create an association in the name of SGOA for Ortho Surgeons from Bharuch to Vapi. Association has intentions to update knowledge of members by organizing various academic programmes and to improve brotherhood amongst the Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Founder Office Bearers were Dr. Shrikant Shah (President), Dr. Satish Patel (Secretary) and Dr. Nishith Shroff (Treasurer).

First clinical meeting was held under chairmanship of Dr. Babubhai Patel at Govt. Medical College on 2nd August 1992.

Subsequent meetings were held every three months at Mahavir Hospital.

First workshop was held on 7th March 1993 on correction of CTEV by JESS. Dr. Sudhir Warrier was faculty.

Hands on workshop on Ilizarov Technique was held on July 1992 at IMA Hall where Dr. A K Singh from Allahabad was faculty.

Academic activities with clinical meetings, workshops, live demonstration, lectures and symposium were organized for the benefit of members at door step on various topics on Trauma Joint Replacements and also on Cold Orthopaedics.

Eminent faculties like Dr. D D Tanna, Dr. Lad, Dr. Sancheti, Dr B B Joshi, Dr. V M Shah, Dr. Vaishnavi, Dr. Shekhar Bhojraj, Dr. Ingalhalikar, Dr. Pachore, Dr. S R Mukhi, Dr. K M Shah, Dr. Dinubhai, Dr. M T Mehta, Dr. Prabodh Desai, Dr. Pankaj Patel, Dr. Dilip Patel, Dr. Rohit Shah, Dr. Jagdish Patwa, Dr. Premal Naik, Dr. Ganjawala, Dr. Maheswari, Dr. Bharat Patel and many more were invited for benefits of members.
